Seqium, Washington - Olympic Peninsula
Mood:  rushed
Topic: Dog Park Review

Fridley and I competed at a Nosework 1 trial yesterday in Port Angeles, WA.  He was 4 for 4 in finding odor, but I was only 2 for 4 in correctly alerting.  Nonetheless, we had a good time.

We had to rush back to Portland on Monday, but stopped for a half hour atthe Sequim Dog Park at Carrie Blake Park.  It's a small park, divided into small and large dog areas, with a lovely view of the Olympic Mountains.  It was sprinkling a bit, and one of the poodles we met was snarky, and I think Fridley missed his best playmate Bella.  But he did get some good exercise before the long drive back to Portland.

The park is located at 202 N. Blake Rd., a short drive from the main Highway 101.

Summer Solstice 2011
Mood:  lazy
Topic: Dog Park Review

Today is the Summer Solstice.  We visited DogPaw's newest off-leash area over in Hockinson.  It is going to be named Kane Memorial Park, after the police dog that was killed in action earlier this year.  It's part of Hockinson Meadows Park, quite a jewel in Clark County's park system.  It's my understanding that the current off-leash area is temporary.  Fridley and Bella had a good romp, though it was hotter than Aussies tend to enjoy, in the 80's.

The park is located just north of Ward Road on 172nd Avenue.

Sidney BC Dog Park
Mood:  a-ok
Topic: Dog Park Review

Heading home (sort of) from Pender Island today, before the Washington State Ferry over to San Juan Island, we stopped at this newer dogpark in Sidney.  It is penned between Lochside Drive and Highway 17, with great views of the bay. Follow Lochside south of town, and it will be on your left. There is a small parking area and single gates.  I was particularly impressed when the fellow mowing the grass stopped for my dogs to pass safely!

Accidental Mayhem at Brush Prairie
Mood:  sad
Topic: Dog Park Review

Fridley, Bella and I had a nice jaunt out at Brush Prairie this morning, walking the perimeter 3 times (1.5 miles I'm told), with a number of lovely dogs.  Our favorite was Lola, the mini-Pin, who came from rescue in Bakersfield, CA.  She looked like a great flyball candidate, especially if we could run our 3 rat terriers with her, and was spunky and athletic.

We were joined by two women who were quite friendly, and their very friendly group of black Labs (2), yellow Lab (1) and lovely Belgian shepherd.  The woman who owned the black Labs told me that her elderly and sick dog had been killed by a pit bull terrier at this park in May, and she found out the same dog had killed another dog in the park earlier.

Then the accident happened.  The Belgian tried to jump the fence, which is around 4 feet tall, and got her hind hock tangled in the wire at the top of the fence.  She couldn't get free, and the two women weren't able to free her, either.  She bit both of them, because she was in such a panic and pain - multiple painful deep bites on hands and arms.

One of the women called 911.  I met the paramedics and fire department at the gate and directed them to where the women were still standing. The dog was freed by the fire department, but then went to hide in the culvert and wouldn't come out.  As I left, Animal Control and the woman's father came, to try to retrieve the poor dog.  I'm afraid that they'll find she has a spiral fracture in that leg, the way it was twisted with all her weight behind it.

My dogs were very calm and well-behaved during the crisis, which was comforting to see!

Sandy River Delta
Mood:  lyrical
Topic: Dog Park Review

This was a nice day to go hang out by the Sandy River, since it was in the 80's and sunny.  My cousin Jett joined us with her two Aussies, Kiva and Rowan Roofwalker.  Good news/bad news:  The blackberries are ripening, so you can get a snack on the hoof; but mosquitoes continue to be a real plague, especially for Jett.  Next time, I'm bringing repellent.  They didn't seem so bad on Monday!

Rowan was in the water a lot today, but only Kiva swam.  My two dogs are willing to wade, but don't really want to get all that wet!  It was a tired bunch of doggies that hiked back to the van!

Stevenson Off-Leash Area - Dogpaw
Mood:  a-ok
Topic: Dog Park Review

Despite being called Stevenson, this park is located in Washougal, Washington, and is one of the great parks sponsored by Dogpaw.  It opened in November 2009, so is one of their newest.  Consider joining Dogpaw, if you use their parks - they are a fantastic organization, and  a treasure for Vancouver Area dogs!  http://www.clarkdogpaw.org/index.shtml

At Stevenson, there's room to run, and small areas of shade, plus big logs for the dogs to jump up on.  Fridley and Bella love to play king of the mountain on such logs, as seen in this photo.

From Highway 14, take a left at 32nd Street, then another left at Addy Street. Parking courtesy of Bi-Mart.  Do not go to the town of Stevenson, Washington, to look for it - it's not there!  I know this for a fact, LOL!

Sandy River Delta/Thousand Acres
Mood:  don't ask
Topic: Dog Park Review
We went back to Sandy River Delta (aka Thousand Acres) today.  It's been a pretty long time since we were here - before the Minnesota trip, for sure!  It's not clear to me who manages the day-to-day here at the park.  The land is US Forest Service - Mt. Hood National Forest.  There were two Multnomah County Sheriff's vehicles leaving as I arrived.  I've heard that off-leash dogs can be ticketed if they are on the paved leash-only trail.  At any rate, some nice person(s) has added more signs that point to trails, and - in some cases - tell you how far your goal is.  We hiked down the western road/trail all the way back to the power lines today.  Much fun!  No pictures, forgot my camera.

New Off-Leash Park Opens in Forest Grove
Mood:  energetic
Topic: Dog Park Review

Thatcher Park Off Leash Area just opened its gates for romping dogs this month.  Located at 750 NW David Hill Road (just off Thatcher), it features 2 fenced areas, one for small dogs, with double gates and water provided.  A group of Eagle Scouts helped build this nicely put-together dog park.  It is not large, but Fridley and Bella got a good romp going and made some new friends.

Yellowstone National Park
Mood:  incredulous

It's a lot more crowded in the summer.  Last time I was here in October.  Lots of bison and elk to be seen.  A lot of people had stopped on the roadside to take photos of a young grizzly bear.  When the dogs started barking, I thought, "Oh, shit, don't bring the bear over here!"  Luckily, the bear ignored us and the 100 other folks gawking at him.

Lily Lake
Mood:  cheeky
Topic: Dog Park Review

Before we entered the Yellowstone National Park, my second visit here, we stopped at a Forest Service road near Lily Lake, in Shoshone National Forest, Wyoming, for the dogs to run.  Dogs are not allowed off-leash in national parks, nor on trails even when leashed, so I wanted them to get some exercise first.  It's not officially a dog park, but no one was around.  Luckly, no bears in sight, either.  There were bear warning signs for Lily Lake itself.  A bit scary!
